Welch’s 100% Grape Juice

August 5, 2012 |

Recently I have recommended Great Value 100% Apple Juice which remarkably had no food additives wasteful for the human body, nutrients only. Here is another good example of that kind: Welch’s 100% Grape Juice which comes without any benign (yellow segments) and biochemically foreign (anti-nutritional, red segments) food additives.

There is a statement on the back of the label which says that the grape juice “Meets American Heart Association food criteria for saturated fat and cholesterol for healthy people over age 2.”  Well, not a big surprise: Where in the world did you see juices or soft drinks with saturated fat and cholesterol in it unless it’s coconut milk? So in this regard, I don’t see any advantage in drinking Welch’s 100% Grape Juice over any other juices and drinks. Therefore perhaps more important is that the juice meets the DyeDiet criteria of a chemically benign processed food which is harmless in moderation even if consumed regularly.

Sugar content. Although the grape juice “contains natural fruit sugars only” (that is great!) its sugar content, 36 g per 8 OZ serving, beats the one of Great Value Apple juice by 30%. Also CSPI warns that “It’s deceptive and misleading for Welch’s to claim that grape juice has any special benefit to heart health.” For this reason I prefer to dilute the juice with cold water 1:2 so that I have a gallon and a half of a less sugary beverage to enjoy and you can do so too.
