Abuelita hot chocolate: When Grandma is an evil

October 27, 2013 |

What could be cozier than to relax in warm recliner at home with a cup of hot chocolate when chill winter winds roar outside? Maybe so, but I would strongly discourage you to rely on Abuelita Authentic Mexican Hot Chocolate Drink Tablets concocted by Nestle. It will screw up your evening and perhaps reduce your health. That’s when sweet smile of Abuelita (Grandma) does not promise you any good: plain sugar forms 74% by weight!

A few other ingredients are not appetizing either: chocolate (barely detected), soy lecithin, vegetable oils, artificial flavor and PGPR – cheap chemical emulsifier often used in place of natural cocoa butter. With not much chocolate in it and flavorless the rest, they have to add chemical flavor to make sugar taste like something else. Even so, I have found the flavor repulsive and the experience unforgettably negative. Poor Abuelita… You are pure evil.

Foodiucate gives descent Yellow C+ rating to Nestle Abuelitas Chocolate Drink Mix, listing 4.5 tsp of sugar per serving and “natural flavors added” which are not.

Surprisingly, for no obvious reason, yet another Fooducate rating for the same product listed as Nestle Authentic Mexican Chocolate Drink Mix is even better, Green B+ despite exactly same ingredients and comments.

Which Fooducate’s result to take seriously is up to users but I do not buy healthy Green B+ rating for a lump of artificially flavored sugar. Finally, Dye Diet Calculator indicates high Health Risk = 1.5 and low Nutritional Value = 0.65. (You need typing in word ‘abuelita’ to see the results).

Bottom line is this: Let Abuelita consume all her cocoa flavored sugar whereas we will better enjoy our real hot chocolate made from natural cocoa.
