Healthy candy: Brookside Dark Chocolate Pomegranate

May 9, 2013 |

Candy is a confection made from sugar but this doesn’t necessary mean that all candies should be as unhealthy as Jolly Rancher made with added artificial colors and flavors. Let me introduce Brookside Dark Chocolate Pomegranate. You can buy it in Sam’s Club, Costco or order online from Amazaon. On the package it reads: “Brookside’s chocolates have discovered a range of exotic fruits from around the world to create the ultimate chocolate experience. The perfect pairing Brookside’s sweetened real fruit juice pieces dipped in luscious dark chocolate. Another perfect pairing from Brookside.”

 Brookside Dark Chocolate

Of course, Brookside candy is sweetened enough with 26 g of sugar per 40 g (1/4 cup) serving size but it doesn’t contain PGPR – Polyglycerol polyricinoleate, a synthetic emulsifier, which is used to replace more expensive cocoa butter as an ingredient in Hershey’s chocolate candy. From one serving you will get 180 calories, small amount of dietary fiber – 1 g and 1 g of protein. No artificial colors or flavors. As a bonus, one serving contains 100 mg of flavanol antioxidants bringing to you DNA protection and anti-carcinogenic effects. Not a bad composition for a candy! Accordingly, The Dye Diet Calculator shows zero Health Risk = 0 due to absence of questionable food additives and Moderate to Good Nutritional Value = 2.28. Enjoy Brookside’s chocolate in moderation and you will stay healthy and energized!
