How Do I Drink Sprite

July 28, 2012 |

I recently reviewed and recommended an All Natural Lemon-Lime soda from Whole Foods Market. Perhaps it has been created as a healthier alternative to its prototype known since 1961  – Sprite Lemon-Lime Soda, a product of Coca-Cola with 100% Natural Flavors as the label says. But it’s not all natural.

The beverage is made with HFCS, no artificial colors and no caffeine that is not bad. However, unlike Lemon-Lime from Whole Foods Market this one contains sodium benzoate which is feared to produce tiny amounts of carcinogenic benzene and also may trigger hyperactivity.  Hence, with Sprite Lemon Lime soda you will be exposed to a moderate chemical risk, DDFI = 6/8 ~ 0.8 and low nutritional value, DDNF = 8/17 ~ 0.5 will be attached to it.

Sugar content, in the form of HFCS, is as high as in the All Natural Lemon-Lime, ~ 50 teaspoons per 2 L bottle. Please note that the American Cancer Society has recently called for comprehensive review of the impact of sugar-sweetened beverages on spreading of obesity and cancer incidence in America.

Bottom line. Although I do NOT recommend any products with a red segment in the DyeDiet diagram, I should admit that Sprite Lemon-Lime soda is much safer than many other popular soft drinks. To reduce possible negative effects of too much sugar I dilute sugary drinks (which I drink seldom) with 1 or 2 parts of fridge-cold water. This also removes excessive lusciousness and makes the beverage more refreshing. Hydrate yourself right!
