Great Value: A Sports Drink for idiots

May 5, 2012 |

“Electrolyte” is nothing but the marketing hook for idiots. I am sick and tired of lies. How about you? I don’t take lies anymore because I hate to feel like an idiot. Do you? I’ll tell you what, if you are the one of those millions people who drink Gatorade, then yes, you still do. On my last raid at Walmart I was hit by an aggressive exposition of yet another poisoned concoction, Great Value Sports Drink with Electrolytes. The key word is “electrolytes.” Here is the inside look into its Fruit Punch version.

Great Value Sports Drink: Risk, Nutrition and Dye Content

I don’t know the market stats but based on the fact that Walmart decided to catch up with Gatotrade in order to grab a slice of the market pie, Gatorade sells well on its false electrolyte statement. Nutrition facts of the Great Value Sports Drink are identical to that of Gatorade in its “electrolyte” part:

Great Value Sports Drink Nutrition FactsAs you can see, every serving of 8 OZ (240 ml) gives you 5% (110 mg) of your daily sodium (2300 mg) and only 1% (30 mg) of your daily potassium (4700 mg). Now let’s do the arithmetic. First of all, 30 mg is NOT 1% of 4700 mg but is only 0.6%. Of course, if you round 0.6 it gives you 1%. So for you to replenish your daily potassium you must drink 240 x 100 = 24000 ml of the Great Value Sports Drink or Gatorade. That is 24000 ml/1000 = 24 liters that is 24/3.785 = 6.3 gallons at least and 10.5 gallons if you calculate based on 0.6%  potassium! Are you an idiot? A 30-year old woman died of drinking mere 2.1 to 2.6 gallons of Classic Coca-Cola!

Why this is a swill? Yes, it is dirt cheap, it is cheaper than dirt! But does this mean for you to drink a swill? I hope not. It is so blush NOT because of the manufacturer embarrassment and, of course, not because of fruits (see the above: CONTAINS 0% JUICE). It’s red because of Red 40 azo dye chemical is added in the amount of 85 mg per 32 FL OZ bottle so with every serving of 8 FL OZ you inject 21 mg of the questionable chemical into your veins. This is a lot for a xenobiotic chemical (please read Behavior, Learning and Health: The Dietary Connection) but unfortunately this is NOT all. Brominated vegetable oil (BVO) will get you too: It will penetrate through your blood-brain barrier right into your brain and will alkylate your DNA and damage your brain. According to the Wikipedia: A case reported that a man who consumed two to four liters of a cola containing BVO on a daily basis experienced memory loss, tremors, fatigue, loss of muscle coordination, headache, ptosis of the right eyelid as well as elevated serum chloride. In the two months it took to correctly diagnose the problem the patient also lost the ability to walk. Eventually bromism was diagnosed and hemodialysis was prescribed which resulted in a reversal of the disorder.

FDA regulation:  Brominated vegetable oil – STAB, INTERM/REG, <15 ppm – In fruit flavored beverages where not precluded by a standard – 180.30. Thus BVO content in beverages should not exceed ~ 15 mg/L. Hence in the above case a person who drunk 2 – 4 L of cola containing BVO a day might have consumed mere 30 to 60 mg of BVO daily to get heavily intoxicated. In 1972, the FDA designed a special transitional category for food-use substances, Interim food additives, whose safety has been called into question. Brominated vegetable oil terrorizes the human body in a number of ways:

  • Mimics natural triglycerides when passing onboard of your body with a concealed bromine “bomb”
  • When inside, after broken down with pancreatic lipase to monoglycerides and the brominated fatty acids, toxic pieces are built into the tissue cells all over your body leading to degradation of muscles, liver, kidneys, heart and brain. See attached file: Toxic Effects of Brominated Vegetable Oils.
  • Slowly releases bromide to the blood stream causing further CNS damage and behavioral issues.

Needless to say that you will take a huge chemical risk  of DDFI = 32/14 ~ 2.3 and what you will get for it is the shameful nutritional value  of DDNF = 14/56 = 0.25. Are you an idiot to let this hazardous crap into your blood?

Don’t be a slave! Some people keep saying that this is their free choice they drink their way to freedom and prosperity. I respond that drinking the chemical swill like Gatorade or this Sports Drink of Great Value is like to be an ignorant and helpless slave.  Because if you don’t understand or you don’t care of what a swill you and your children drink, then not only you piss away your own health, you also squander your Republic and your freedom too.  Only a healthy nation can be strong.

Better alternatives. Anything is better than polluted water. But if you want something less boring than perfectly healthy pure water, there are real electrolytes at Walmart just waiting for you on the next aisle. Consider ONE coconut water or V8 Original that contain tens times the amount of potassium you get from the fake electrolytes like Gatorade or Great Value Sports Drink. Don’t be fooled, stop drinking crap and hydrate yourself right! That’s what the real freedom is about – to obey the Natural Law and not the market game rules!
