V8 V-Fusion is healthy, but Light is not

April 4, 2012 |

Here is another reliable product from the Campbell Soup Company, V8 V-Fusion which has NO dangerous food additives. This is a balanced blend of 10 vegetable and fruit juices reconstituted from the concentrates. NO sugar or High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) Added; NO artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. Bravo!

V8 V-Fusion: Risk and NutritionV8 V-Fusion: Risk and Nutrition

It’s a pleasure to look at the DyeDiet risk diagram this time: it’s mostly green (13 nutrients) with only 3 harmless food additives (yellow segments)! Clarified banana juice is simply filtered banana juice. On the Campbell’s website you can read: “V8 V-Fusion is a breakthrough juice that gives your patrons a full serving of vegetables plus a full serving of fruit in every 8-ounce glass.* The result is a nutrition-packed beverage made of 100% juice that’s also delicious and refreshing. Get the Veggies, Taste The Fruit.”

Yes, this is all true. The beverage is also loaded with Vitamin C (100% Reference Daily Intake, RDA), Vitamin E (15% RDA) and Vitamin A (70% RDA). This is good too, however, to me, the today’s America “vitamins rush” seems to be another extreme and, perhaps, potentially dangerous swing: the human body doesn’t need extra vitamins  (please be patient, the link is a little slow). In fact, too much vitamins can make you sick. Furthermore, Vitamin E pills may raise risk of prostate cancer, not reduce. We need to take serious care about consumption of Vitamin A too.

Sugar content: Stop blaming sugar, blame YOURSELF!  V8 V-Fusion is rather high in sugar: 25 g per 8 OZ (240 ml) serving, that is close to 55 g sugar in Coca-Cola Classic, 20 FL OZ (591 ml). But as always, the solution is simple: Don’t drink Fusion in place of water, consider it as a treat. Recently a video “Sugar Is Toxic” has been spread in the internet. Doctors state in the video that “sugar is toxic!” Please do not be misled; sugar (sucrose) is one of the human’s macronutrients. Basic principle of toxicology says: EVERYTHING IS TOXIC in large amounts. You can kill yourself by overeating healthiest food in the world! Again, the solution is simple: CONTROL YOURSELF, EAT LESS, WORK MORE. I mean both physical and intellectual work. So, it’s up to YOU to damage your health or not to. It is outrageously stupid to blame sugar.

8 V-Fusion Light. In my opinion, this is downgraded beverage. Why? Because sucralose, a chlorinated sugar, is added. Why so? Look, what the consumers often want are two incompatible outcomes together: eat or drink tons of sweets and get little or zero calories. In respond to this childish caprice food industry quickly offers your favorite drink with the no calorie chlorinated chemical. And you buy it without questioning what long-term health effects this chlorocarbon is going to produce. So far, no one has the answer. And you, the consumer, vote with your dollar to be a guinea pig helping to extend this nationwide toxicology experiment. But you cannot confuse your nature with the sucralose trick too long: be ready for big medical bills (read an article A Role for Sweet Taste Calorie Predictive Relations in Energy Regulation). Keep in mind this: It doesn’t matter that sucralose is made from natural sugar:: It is completely different and absolutely foreign to the human body chemical. While the rest of V8 V-Fusion Light ingredients are perfectly safe, I cannot recommend a product containing an artificial sweetener. What is a better solution? Cut drinking your favorite sugary beverage to one or two per week. All the rest should be just pure water and some tea. Here are the Risk Factors of 250 most popular food additives in America (PDF file): Risk Factors of Food Additives.

Bottom line. So if you drink reasonable amounts of V8 V-Fusion juices (not Light!) you will be just fine: nourished and healthy. You will get ZERO chemical risk, DDFI = 0/25 = 0 and good nutritional value of DDNF = 25/12 ~ 2.

I hope this report helps to make less risky food choices for you and your loved ones!

If you want a healthier Light drink, dilute it with water 1:1 and add stevia extract. Did you know this drink does not have fiber like regular fruits and vegetables? It is not designed to replace fruit or vegetables in the diet. Also, you don’t need to blame yourself, there is only 37.5 grams of sugar. But that is still close to 55 grams in Coke Classic.

    Homemade Light drink:
    DDRF: 40
    DDFI: 0/25 = 0 (excellent)
    DDNF: 25/15 = 1.7 (good)

To calculate the DDFI, divide the sum of all the red ingredients by the sum of all the green ingredients. To calculate the DDNF, divide the sum of all the green ingredients by the sum of all the yellow and red ingredients. The redder the diagram is, the more riskier and less healthier the product is.

Remember that only pure water is the healthiest zero calorie drink:
    DDRF: 1
    DDFI: 0/1 = 0 (excellent)
    DDNF: 1/0 = 0 (outstanding)

That’s right. Thank you! Just a little correction needed: the value of DDNF = 1/0 is infinity that is a little nonsence but that’s what we call “exception” and say that pure water is “fully nutritious.” Thank you again!
